2022 work
It's been a year!
Music
Completed my 4th #looptober, completing it with 31 little songs! (link to all songs) This year had a lot of bass heavy pieces that I think fit together well. There's stars and notes on that list, but a few of my favorites are:
- was that hole there
- who do you think you are, I am
- it will take
- mud sucker
selfsame beats
I put all my music on an internet radio style static page at https://selfsamegames.com/beats/. It randomizes 142 songs into a playlist but it picks 4 of my favorites to start off with.
Gamedev
Fen2 Fantasy Console
I started working on a fennel-lang fantasy console https://notabug.org/selfsame/fen2/. It's black and white with a 640x480 display size. It's written in Rust! I also gave a talk on it for this year's fennel conference (link to video)
Jumpminster
While working on the fantasy console I made a game for the fennel game jam (selfsame.itch.io/jumpminster). It's a platformer where you have to increase the amount of available jumps in a life by finding pickups. It has a nice in-game level editor as well.
Prototypes
Untitled Fresno Nightcrawler Game
I started working on an adventure game based on my favorite cryptid, the Fresno Nightcrawler. The idea was you'd walk around different suburban scenes as seen through security cams, roleplaying being creepy and maybe unlocked different endings based on where you went in the night. I'd love to work more on this at some point
VR Stereograph Museum
I prototyped an idea I've had bouncing around to render the two sides of old stereograms for different eyes, creating a 3D image within VR. It works! Obviously the screenshot doesn't do it justice but it's somthing I'd like to come back to, maybe with a cozy interior and a pile of old stereograms you can rifle through.
Character Design
Comet Guy
A fun looping animation made with some of the newer Blender Geometry Node features.
Other Guys
Most of these started as sketches and I really enjoy manifesting them in the real world.
And a handful of Blender files that got interesting. Would really love do a Pingu animation at some point though I think rigging would be challenging.
Toy Design
I designed a series of injection molded classic monsters for Mountain Town Toys
Hobby Sculpture
I did a goblin riding a salamander for #goblinweek
using two kinds of epoxy
I also tried out Monster Clay, a non hardening wax based clay, and really love it
And some polymer (super sculpey / cosclay)
The size of small coffee mugs I can make got drastically smaller:
Drawing
I did not draw or paint as much as I would have liked this year, but I did a bit. These are some illustrations I did for The Ogdo literary journal
Studios
Hobby sculpture desk before and after we moved:
And as of September I have a new garage studio with a full ceramics setup!
Ceramics
I am back on the wheel and doing some interesting figurative work as well. I also started doing slip casting of some masks which is working great. I opened my shop back up at skull.supply as well and sold a bit of works.
Looking forward to 2023
Honestly I have no idea. It's a weird time to be a visual artist with AI generation progressing so rapidly. I am planning on drawing and painting more, and keeping up with ceramics. It would be nice to revisit one of my game prototypes as well.
